PURPOSE OF LIFE

Guru:        Who is that? Child! Why are you so anguished?

Student:    I am blind and groping in darkness unable to perceive the purpose of this life.

G:        Do you think there is a purpose to this life?

S:    Isn't there any, master! There were Rishis who learnt and taught Vedas and Upanishads, there kings and Monarchs who conquered the worlds and also the mean and the meaningless.  What happened to them all after death, Master?

G:    You innocent duckling! When the whole world is mad of sensual pleasures with this body, why do you bother what happens after death? Forget about that inquisitiveness. I will teach the way to possess all the eight coveted treasures. Enjoy them.

S:    No master! No! I enjoyed them all and learnt that they are ephemeral and mean. I hold no desire for them. There is one question that plagues me. Where do we come from? Where do we go? Enough if you clear this doubt.

G:        When it is beyond the realm of divinity to grasp it, what to speak of mortals?
S:    If seers like you deny teaching us about it, master, where have we to go? Do you condemn us to this world of strife and the circle of life and death forever? Is there no way out, master for us?
G:    Why not? There is. This body is equipped to learn the temporal as well as the spiritual or eternal knowledge. This body is the raft for both for anchoring in Sansara or navigate to salvation. Infatuated with the enticing ephemeral world and confusing it to be the only and the lasting, we are rolling on the Potter's Wheel of life and death cycles. We have to realise that all that we see is transitory and there is some primal cause which is permanent that is responsible for this apparent drama. One has to self-experience it internally and that is the purpose of life.
S:        How can I get that self-realisation, master?
G:    There are several schools... like the school of intellect, the school of devotion etc. But it is the concerted opinion of elders that Rajayoga is the easiest to follow for salvation.
S:        Rajayoga? Who is going to teach me that, master?
G:        When the time comes, God himself shall come to you as Guru and shall teach you.
S:    For a man groping in utter darkness, you chanced upon me like a beacon.  You are my Guru. You are my God.  Kindly teach me the secret of that Yoga and unveil the truth.
G:    Then let me teach you the arcane knowledge. Pay attention to it.  Just as you can’t convert metal to gold without arresting its quintessence, you can't see the truth unless you arrest your mind. Mind is the chief hurdle that stands between us and salvation. It is the cause of our temporal bonds. If you can conquer your mind, you can conquer everything else. This is called Yoga.  When you stand in the state of Samadhi subduing the wavering mind, and the sensual desires, your mind assumes infinite power. Then there is nothing you can't do. The nature that toyed with you thus far becomes itself a toy in your hands. It surrenders to you.
S:        Is this what is meant by salvation, master?
G:    No, my child. This is the first step to it. And if you continue to meditate with unwavering mind, and without being fooled by that infinite power, you come out as a self luminous, blissful, eternal and self evident truth. That is what is meant by Tat Tvam Asi. You can see yourself in me. So go ahead and enjoy the fruits of Rajayoga.
S:        Guru is the creator, Guru is the sustainer, and Guru is the annihilator
Guru is a veritable Supreme Being, and to that Guru, I bow my head.
